There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Sam Hartman a full 43 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.19
· Pick 19
· JC Latham
· OT
· rank 16
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Dallas Turner
· LB-EDGE
· rank 22
Dallas Turner at Round 2, Pick 8 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.19
· Pick 51
· Troy Fautanu
· OT
· rank 41
Troy Fautanu at No. 51 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.19
· Pick 83
· Mekhi Wingo
· DT
· rank 72
Mekhi Wingo at the 83rd pick is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Christian Haynes
· OG
· rank 90
They paid sticker price for Christian Haynes in the 88th overall pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.19
· Pick 119
· Cam Hart
· CB
· rank 105
Value with a capital V on Cam Hart in pick No. 119, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.35
· Pick 135
· James Williams
· S
· rank 130
A reasonable price with a little left over, James Williams in the 135th pick. A minor itch, scratched.
R6.22
· Pick 197
· Miles Frazier
· OG
· rank 213
Miles Frazier at pick 197 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.42
· Pick 217
· Jase McClellan
· RB
· rank 212
Jase McClellan in slot 217 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.44
· Pick 219
· Sam Hartman
· QB
· rank 262
They talked themselves into Sam Hartman at No. 219, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.20
· Pick 240
· Ricky Pearsall
· WR
· rank 200
They robbed the room for Ricky Pearsall here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
