Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Chau Smith-Wade, the No. 169 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 246. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Tagovailoa has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
They took T.J. Tampa at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at No. 57, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A reach on Tyler Davis in slot 90; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Audric Estime in Round 3, Pick 29 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Donovan Jackson at pick 125 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Cole Bishop at the 135th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Moose Muhammad III in pick No. 163 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
Isaiah Davis slid further than he should have, and the 203rd overall pick is lovely value for the running back. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked Joshua Gray enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 217. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Taulia Tagovailoa in Round 6, Pick 44 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Chau Smith-Wade at the 246th pick is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
