You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Ashton Gillotte in the 111th overall pick.
However the rest shakes out, Paul at that price is a win they earned. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· JC Latham
· OT
· rank 16
In the Round 1 slot they get protection for the quarterback, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
R2.7
· Pick 39
· Emeka Egbuka
· WR
· rank 25
They let Emeka Egbuka come to them and pounced at the 39th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.11
· Pick 43
· Kamari Lassiter
· CB
· rank 40
Kamari Lassiter at pick 43 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.25
· Pick 57
· Adonai Mitchell
· WR
· rank 28
Adonai Mitchell in the 57th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.11
· Pick 75
· TreVeyon Henderson
· RB
· rank 84
A reach on TreVeyon Henderson in slot 75; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.18
· Pick 82
· Patrick Paul
· OT
· rank 50
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 82 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
R4.11
· Pick 111
· Ashton Gillotte
· DL-EDGE
· rank 163
Ashton Gillotte in slot 111 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.35
· Pick 135
· Tykee Smith
· S
· rank 127
Tykee Smith slid further than he should have, and pick No. 135 is lovely value for the safety. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R6.14
· Pick 189
· Ainias Smith
· WR
· rank 161
Taking Ainias Smith in Round 6, Pick 14 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.42
· Pick 217
· Eugene Asante
· LB
· rank 252
Value said wait; Eugene Asante in the 217th overall pick says they were not listening. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R6.44
· Pick 219
· Oronde Gadsden II
· TE
· rank 202
The board had Oronde Gadsden II higher than pick 219, and the tight end fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.12
· Pick 232
· Sam Hartman
· QB
· rank 260
Sam Hartman at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
