Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Jeremy Moussa at slot 232 is 252 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
The Packers indulged a want in Smith while a need in edge rusher, tight end and other spots stayed open. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Schrader value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a ballhawk on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on Troy Fautanu at pick 39, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Brian Thomas Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamren Kinchens. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 82nd overall pick on Maason Smith with edge rusher, tight end and other spots unsolved.
A conviction pick on Braelon Allen at the Round 3 slot that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They did well to land Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 111, just ahead of his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No edge and no loss on Sataoa Laumea in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had Cody Schrader higher than pick 189, and the running back fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach on Bryce Foster in the 217th overall pick; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Matthew Jones well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached into another round for Jeremy Moussa, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
