There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Sam Hartman a full 36 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
The Eichenberg pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, running back and other spots still on the board. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Thrash steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 9 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Edgerrin Cooper went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid a round early for Cooper Beebe in slot 43, more than the board wanted. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A slide stopped in the Round 3 slot, with Tyler Guyton worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Rod Moore. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Tommy Eichenberg adds a linebacker and leaves edge rusher, running back and other spots untouched.
Ainias Smith in No. 135 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jamari Thrash slipping to pick 187 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Duce Chestnut at the Round 6 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cornelius Johnson in the 219th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Sam Hartman at slot 230 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
