Thirty-one other rooms let DJ James slide, and the Eagles were the ones holding the card at pick 163. Highway robbery. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes. They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
The dealing was even money, start to finish.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd overall pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Chop Robinson slipping to No. 50 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They robbed the room for Trey Benson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jacob Cowing in Round 4, Pick 23 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Matt Goncalves at pick No. 124 is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
They took Cole Bishop at par in the 127th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They will replay Ainias Smith at pick 137 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
DJ James in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Luke McCaffrey at Round 5, Pick 36 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, MarShawn Lloyd in pick 178, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
A safety of that caliber at the 243rd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
