There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Sam Hartman a full 38 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. It is not that Cooper is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
They banked enough surplus on Jones to cover a lot of smaller sins. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a green-dot type in the middle, though the board says they badly overpaid.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Edgerrin Cooper adds a linebacker and leaves edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots untouched.
By-the-book stuff, Javon Bullard at pick 58 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A big swing on Ray Davis at the 88th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Khyree Jackson in Round 3, Pick 28 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached into another round for Mason McCormick, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Jarrian Jones in pick 169, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A wild overpay on Garret Greenfield in slot 202, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
A conviction pick on Trevin Wallace at pick No. 219 that the board grades a round light. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They talked themselves into Sam Hartman at the 245th overall pick, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value said wait; Jalen Sundell in Round 7, Pick 35 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
