The Packers put a flag in the ground for Akheem Mesidor, 131 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
However the rest shakes out, Sabb at that price is a win they earned. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get an island corner, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick 29 they get a bendy edge with upside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They barely believed it either: Derrick Harmon still on the board at the 56th pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Jihaad Campbell at No. 62 for years; that is how good the value is. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A reach for Maxwell Hairston in slot 88; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Patrick Bryant enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 4 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Jake Majors in pick 133 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Nick Nash this early at pick No. 159. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Mason Taylor all the way to the 160th overall pick, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
They reached into another round for Akheem Mesidor, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Keon Sabb in the 200th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Tommy Mellott in Round 7, Pick 21 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Ollie Gordon II at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
