Thirty-one other rooms let Josh Newton slide, and the Packers were the ones holding the card at the 88th pick. Highway robbery. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
They are betting Smith proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy little value on JC Latham in the 25th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy bit of business in slot 41, where Tyler Nubin graded well above the range. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Chris Braswell in pick No. 57 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Josh Newton at Round 3, Pick 25 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jonathon Brooks at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They let Max Melton come to them and pounced at No. 125. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A real head-scratcher, Braelon Allen in pick 135 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
You do not let a linebacker like Jaylan Ford reach the 203rd pick and blink. They did not. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A wild overpay on Maurice Smith in the 217th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A premium they did not need to pay, J.J. Weaver a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Ja'Had Carter at pick No. 246 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
