The trade table was where it all came apart. The 49ers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while running back, quarterback and other spots went begging. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Johnson. They will need Frazier to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, running back very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 31 they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
By-the-book stuff, T.J. Tampa at pick 43 squarely in line with his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cooper DeJean at cornerback with running back, quarterback and other spots open.
A conviction pick on Zach Frazier at slot 82 that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kiran Amegadjie in Round 3, Pick 31 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nothing to complain about; Zak Zinter went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Justin Rogers at par in slot 131, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow Cornelius Johnson was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
