Somebody in pick 196 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Chris Paul Jr., the No. 112 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 23 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
Dylan Fairchild at slot 54 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Xavier Watts at the Round 3 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Steal is underselling it; Danny Stutsman at Round 4, Pick 21 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They barely believed it either: Brashard Smith still on the board at the 158th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Chris Paul Jr. in pick No. 196 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Taking Davison Igbinosun in the 237th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Circle this one: Jared Wilson at No. 250 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
