The Packers did not so much draft Karson Sharar as overpay for him, 76 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Landing Slaughter that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Christen Miller in No. 52; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jake Slaughter in pick 84 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It fills a real need, too.
Jalon Kilgore at pick No. 120 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on Domani Jackson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Patrick Payton at the 201st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value said wait; Enrique Cruz Jr. in the 236th overall pick says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
They talked themselves into Karson Sharar at Round 7, Pick 39, and the board did not agree. It adds depth where they could use a little.
