Thirty-one other rooms let Kalel Mullings slide, and the Patriots were the ones holding the card at the 232nd pick. Highway robbery. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
They will need Wilson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The veteran additions, A.J. Brown chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Bottom line, they left the weekend a clearly better team, and they earned every bit of it.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
Steal is underselling it; Malaki Starks at slot 38 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Tyler Warren in Round 2, Pick 13 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a linebacker like Jihaad Campbell reach pick No. 77 and blink. They did not. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jared Wilson at the 104th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nick Nash. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Jonah Monheim at the 220th pick is a fall that decides a draft. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Kalel Mullings all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A running back of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
