The board owed the Chiefs one, and it paid up: D'Angelo Ponds, the No. 48 name on the board, sitting there at pick 74 like a gift left on the doorstep. The bottom line is a respectable B.
For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Thomas pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The Chiefs indulged a want in Ponds while a need in tight end, quarterback and other spots stayed open.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 9 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. More want than need.
Sonny Styles in the 29th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 8, with Chris Brazzell II worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A want over a need in No. 74: D'Angelo Ponds adds a cornerback while tight end, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
A real head-scratcher, Gracen Halton in slot 110 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Nothing to complain about; J.C. Davis went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They barely believed it either: Kaytron Allen still on the board at the 169th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
DJ Campbell at pick No. 176 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Zavion Thomas well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
