Call it larceny. Smael Mondon Jr. sat on the board until pick 186, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Luther Burden III at the 20th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Jalon Walker at slot 44 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Shavon Revel Jr. all the way to pick No. 51, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Dylan Sampson was still sitting there in pick 76, and they pounced on premier running back value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Alfred Collins still on the board at the Round 3 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Danny Stutsman in the 148th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaeden Roberts slipping to No. 168 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Sebastian Castro in Round 5, Pick 33 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Cam Skattebo in Round 5, Pick 36 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 186th pick is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Carson Schwesinger at the Round 6 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Cobee Bryant at No. 195 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They read the board right and Jacob Parrish was the payoff at pick No. 209. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let a running back like Kyle Monangai reach pick 248 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
