Call it larceny. Sebastian Castro sat on the board until No. 148, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice. Just about everything broke right, and the A follows.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
If Williams pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Bottom line, with Will Johnson leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 20th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick 27 they get a three-down second-level presence at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
You do not let a running back like Omarion Hampton reach pick No. 46 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Jihaad Campbell still on the board at No. 76. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Savion Williams in the Round 3 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow TreVeyon Henderson was still sitting there in slot 91, and they pounced on premier running back value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They talked themselves into Vernon Broughton at the 120th pick, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They jumped the gun on Hayden Conner, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Sebastian Castro in No. 148 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Lander Barton at pick 168 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Jabbar Muhammad at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
