This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Walter Rouse, the No. 163 name on the board, stolen at slot 231. Call it a C- and check back in two years.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. With edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
The board had Amarius Mims higher than pick 34, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cooper DeJean in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Edgerrin Cooper in slot 103 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A want over a need in Round 4, Pick 21: Elijah Jones adds a cornerback while edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 137 with a little surplus value in Sataoa Laumea. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Walter Rouse in pick 231 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
