Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Patrick Payton at pick 192 is 66 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Scott at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 10th overall pick they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. More want than need.
In No. 28 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Omar Cooper Jr. at pick No. 37 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They read the board right and Peter Woods was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Caleb Banks at the 57th pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They went early on Keylan Rutledge in Round 2, Pick 28, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A cornerback of that caliber at pick No. 89 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A wild overpay on DJ Campbell in slot 145, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jimmy Rolder in pick 186 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Patrick Payton at Round 6, Pick 11 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
VJ Payne in No. 193 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
