Quarterback settled, McCarthy in the fold, and a D- for the Giants.

The Garrett Nelson pick is the one that will follow the Giants into the fall. They took him 69 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They have staked the next five years on J.J. McCarthy, which is the only story that really matters here.

The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The King steal is the beam this whole class leans on.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Joe Alt · OT · rank 3
In pick 6 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.25 · Pick 25 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 43
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a long-term answer under center, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 58
T'Vondre Sweat at the Round 2 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick No. 47 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Kalen King · CB · rank 41
Kalen King in No. 57 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 68
Payton Wilson at slot 70 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 97
Tykee Smith at the 108th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 141
No drama and no debate, Luke McCaffrey went about where he belonged in the 140th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Brennan Jackson · DE-EDGE · rank 174
A straight-up fair deal on Brennan Jackson at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Javon Baker · WR · rank 180
A reasonable price with a little left over, Javon Baker in pick No. 185. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.31 · Pick 251 · Devin Leary · QB · rank 261
A conviction pick on Devin Leary at slot 251 that the board grades a round light. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.32 · Pick 252 · Garrett Nelson · LB-EDGE · rank 321
Garrett Nelson at Round 7, Pick 32 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
