There is conviction, and then there is this. The Giants took Keagen Trost a full 52 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. Need was not the driver here.
Omar Cooper Jr. at the Round 2 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Zakee Wheatley in pick No. 105 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Keagen Trost this early at the 130th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Skyler Gill-Howard at par in No. 145, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Josh Cameron in slot 186 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kobe Baynes at the 192nd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They talked themselves into Bobby Jamison-Travis at pick No. 193, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
