The war room fell hard for Austin Stogner, and it showed at the 143rd pick: 47 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. Landing Wilson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Safety is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
The board had Kamren Kinchens higher than No. 33, and the safety fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Chop Robinson at pick 39 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Ja'Lynn Polk in pick No. 47 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid a round early for Blake Corum in the 65th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached into another round for Zak Zinter, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on Tommy Eichenberg in Round 4, Pick 1, and the value did not follow. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A slide stopped in the 107th pick, with Roman Wilson worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Austin Stogner at No. 143, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Sam Hartman at Round 6, Pick 10 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
