New York Giants

The Giants fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B+.

Future B+

The real work happened on the phones. The Giants fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.

The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Irving pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Johnson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

Michael Thomas gives the group a proven body among the projects.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 14
In slot 14 they get a problem off the edge. A real need, handled.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 42
J.J. McCarthy at pick 39 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.13 · Pick 45 · Keon Coleman · WR · rank 44
No edge and no loss on Keon Coleman in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 53
Kingsley Suamataia at the 47th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 74
They paid sticker price for Christian Haynes in pick No. 70, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 92
The board had Bucky Irving higher than Round 4, Pick 8, and the running back fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 152
A reach for Theo Johnson in No. 140; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 189
No drama and no debate, Michael Barrett went about where he belonged in the 185th overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
