The Giants did not so much draft Taulia Tagovailoa as overpay for him, 63 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
Landing Abrams-Draine that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
Joe Alt at slot 6 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
In pick No. 23 they get a weapon on the perimeter, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They did well to land Keon Coleman in the Round 2 slot, just ahead of his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They read the board right and Tyler Nubin was the payoff at the 52nd pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Xavier Worthy at par in the 64th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Good price on Patrick Paul in Round 3, Pick 6, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Blake Corum at Round 3, Pick 19 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Somehow Kris Abrams-Draine was still sitting there in the 108th overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Chau Smith-Wade in the 128th pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Ben Sinnott at pick No. 129 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Christian Jones at slot 141 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Brennan Jackson in No. 154 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
The board fumbled Malik Mustapha all the way to pick 194, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Taulia Tagovailoa. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
