The Giants spent the pick that matters most on Caleb Williams, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Call it a C- and check back in two years.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
Reaching for Edwards left real value on the table behind him. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
If Caleb Williams and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
In the 19th overall pick they get a seam-stretching tight end, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 24 they get a matchup problem out wide at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 35, where Nate Wiggins graded well above the range. It fills a real need, too.
J.J. McCarthy at No. 66 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They let Adisa Isaac come to them and pounced at the Round 3 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Devontez Walker at the 90th pick is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Somehow Marshawn Kneeland was still sitting there in the 107th pick, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Ja'Lynn Polk in pick No. 128 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Will Shipley at the 144th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Elijah Jones at pick 163 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Luke McCaffrey slipping to slot 164 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Theo Johnson all the way to Round 5, Pick 35, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
They liked Daijun Edwards enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 173. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They will replay Christian Jones at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Kitan Oladapo still on the board at the 183rd pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Tykee Smith in pick No. 186 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
