The phones were a trap the Giants kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. Put together, it is a D-.
They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They will need Thomas to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Newton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 39 with a little surplus value in Adonai Mitchell. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value with a capital V on Tyler Nubin in slot 47, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Bralen Trice at No. 70 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Ray Davis went about where he belonged in the 108th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Xavier Thomas at the 140th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Circle this one: Josh Newton at pick No. 153 is a fall that decides a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid a round early for Trevor Keegan in Round 5, Pick 18, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board had cheaper options than Jordan Jefferson at the 177th pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Layden Robinson at slot 185 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
