The Giants went off the board in a big way for Zakhari Franklin, 69 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Everything downstream of Quinn Ewers depends on Quinn Ewers, and the building knows it. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 17 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. A real need, handled.
A reach on Quinn Ewers in slot 25; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cooper DeJean at No. 49 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
A conviction pick on Ja'Lynn Polk at the 54th pick that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Kiran Amegadjie in Round 4, Pick 5 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Frank Gore Jr. in the 142nd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
A real head-scratcher, Cam Hart in the 154th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Andrew Raym well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Zakhari Franklin at Round 7, Pick 9 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
