They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Jayden Daniels is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.

Every board in the league had Wilson lower, and that gap is the story. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

It is not that Wilson is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first. Landing Mims that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

The kind of weekend a front office frames and hangs on the wall.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 8
In pick No. 7 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 22
Dallas Turner at the 34th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 23
Amarius Mims is a better player than slot 37 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 52
They paid up for Brian Thomas Jr. at the 39th pick when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 46
A straight-up fair deal on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 80
Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 3, Pick 5 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Tate Ratledge · OG · rank 115
A reach on Tate Ratledge in No. 100; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 144
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Payton Wilson adds a linebacker and leaves tight end, running back and other spots untouched.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 198
Darius Robinson at pick No. 180 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Willie Roberts · CB · rank 209
A quiet steal in Round 7, Pick 3: Willie Roberts for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.8 · Pick 228 · Walter Rouse · OT · rank 241
They went early on Walter Rouse in the 228th pick, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
