Start where it matters. The Commanders took Michael Penix Jr. to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Cephus value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Every board in the league had Cooper lower, and that gap is the story.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick No. 25 they get a blindside protector at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They liked Jackson Powers-Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 2 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid up for Edgerrin Cooper at pick 41 when waiting would have done the job. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Javon Bullard at No. 67 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
By-the-book stuff, Khyree Jackson at the 100th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Roger Rosengarten at slot 181 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Brevyn Spann-Ford at Round 7, Pick 3 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A quiet steal in the 249th overall pick: Joshua Cephus for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
