The rest of the league will want that one back. Dwight McGlothern tumbling to the Cowboys in the Round 7 slot is a gift they did not have to think twice about. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.
They will need Hartman to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In No. 4 they get a blindside protector at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 22nd overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
In the 24th pick they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
By-the-book stuff, T'Vondre Sweat at pick No. 43 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Edgerrin Cooper in pick 56. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Troy Franklin at Round 3, Pick 7 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaylen Wright in the Round 3 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 22, where Zak Zinter graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Will Shipley here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Fair-plus on Justin Eboigbe, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Circle this one: Josh Newton at No. 162 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Taking James Williams in the 168th pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steal is underselling it; Trevor Keegan at the 173rd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A edge rusher of that caliber at the Round 6 slot is the definition of value, full stop. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
A wild overpay on Sam Hartman in pick 216, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Justin Rogers at Round 7, Pick 13 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Somehow Dwight McGlothern was still sitting there in pick 244, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
