There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Cowboys started one anyway for Zion Logue, 48 picks ahead of schedule. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D+.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. It is not that Trice is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Landing Coleman that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 18 they get an island corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Darius Robinson. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Keon Coleman in the 56th pick, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A slide stopped in the 68th overall pick, with Jeremiah Trotter Jr. worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Bralen Trice adds an edge rusher and leaves quarterback and tight end untouched.
No drama and no debate, Blake Corum went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Zak Zinter in the 103rd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Cole Bishop at slot 111 squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Tyler Davis at Round 4, Pick 16 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 138 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Luke McCaffrey at the 141st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Roger Rosengarten in pick 166 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Kamal Hadden at No. 167, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 173 with a little surplus value in Anthony Gould. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Jordan Jefferson in slot 184, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They liked Frank Gore Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in the 213th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid a round early for Andrew Raym in pick No. 219, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Solomon Byrd at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Zion Logue. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
