Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Josaiah Stewart, the No. 41 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 7, Pick 22. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
Reaching for Hancock left real value on the table behind him. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
Nothing to complain about; Travis Hunter went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
In the 28th overall pick they get a double-digit-sack hope, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Wyatt Milum reach the 38th pick and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tyler Booker in No. 69 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Donovan Jackson at Round 3, Pick 13 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A big swing on Jordan Hancock at the Round 4 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay Walter Nolen at pick 104 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled Ashton Jeanty all the way to pick No. 143, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
Jihaad Campbell at the 194th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Lander Barton in No. 214 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Steal is underselling it; Tre Harris at the 215th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Quinshon Judkins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: T.J. Sanders still on the board at pick 220. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Josaiah Stewart in pick No. 238, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
