Thirty-one other rooms let Payton Wilson slide, and the Packers were the ones holding the card at the Round 3 slot. Highway robbery. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The Packers indulged a want in Wilson while a need in edge rusher, cornerback and other spots stayed open. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get protection for the quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in slot 41. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Javon Bullard at No. 58 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Payton Wilson in the 88th overall pick leaves edge rusher, cornerback and other spots for later.
Good price on Blake Corum in the Round 3 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Johnny Wilson at the 126th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
