The Commanders won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: A-.

The real work happened on the phones. The Commanders fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.

The cost of the Vidal reach is exactly the players who went right after him. It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.10 · Pick 10 · JC Latham · OT · rank 16
In pick 10 they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 57
Kingsley Suamataia in Round 2, Pick 4 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 36
They took Ja'Tavion Sanders at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 43
No edge and no loss on T'Vondre Sweat in slot 40; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 70
Cooper Beebe at pick No. 67 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Malik Washington · WR · rank 96
Malik Washington in the 100th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Javon Solomon · OLB-EDGE · rank 117
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves edge rusher and quarterback untouched.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 101
Value with a capital V on Cam Hart in No. 110, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Jaylin Simpson · CB · rank 136
Fair-plus on Jaylin Simpson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.7 · Pick 143 · Jamari Thrash · WR · rank 131
A tidy bit of business in the 143rd overall pick, where Jamari Thrash graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 206
Jared Wiley at Round 6, Pick 4 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Kimani Vidal · RB · rank 252
Kimani Vidal at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
