Somebody in Round 7, Pick 8 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Dolphins sat still while Nicholas Singleton, the No. 99 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The Mellott pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A tidy little value on Tyler Warren in pick No. 48, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Jalon Walker at the 98th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Kaleb Johnson in pick 99, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Andrew Mukuba at No. 115 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jake Majors in the 149th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Miles Frazier at slot 156 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nicholas Singleton in Round 7, Pick 8 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Garrett Dellinger at Round 7, Pick 15 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tommy Mellott well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
