The rest of the league had time to spare on Stefon Thompson; the Commanders did not wait, grabbing him 52 spots ahead at slot 220. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Jayden Daniels gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. The Solomon pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback, edge rusher and other spots.
For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jordan Morgan. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reach on Ja'Tavion Sanders in Round 2, Pick 14; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Junior Colson at No. 67 squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in the 101st overall pick leaves cornerback, edge rusher and other spots for later.
Malik Washington at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Sinnott at the 138th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid up for Isaiah Davis at Round 6, Pick 6 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value said wait; Stefon Thompson in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trente Jones this early at slot 232. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
