Call it larceny. Ollie Gordon II sat on the board until Round 7, Pick 1, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Tyler Warren at the Round 2 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Xavier Watts at Round 3, Pick 5 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 77 with a little surplus value in Quinshon Judkins. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy little value on Charles Grant in the 105th pick, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Hollin Pierce in No. 145 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
You do not let a running back like Ollie Gordon II reach pick 219 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 222nd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jack Kiser in pick No. 240, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
