The Cowboys lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.
They have staked the next five years on Bo Nix, which is the only story that really matters here. If Pearsall pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
Muhammad at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 30 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ricky Pearsall this early at Round 2, Pick 20. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ladd McConkey at slot 62 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
TreVeyon Henderson at the 93rd overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Sataoa Laumea at pick No. 130 is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Malik Mustapha was still sitting there in No. 174, and they pounced on premier safety value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Nothing to complain about; Tatum Bethune went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Jabbar Muhammad at the 251st pick is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Aaron Frost, who had no business lasting to No. 256. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
