The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Caleb Williams, and the whole operation now runs on his development. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The Singer value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Barner pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
Troy Fautanu at pick 34 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A tidy bit of business in the 42nd pick, where Edgerrin Cooper graded well above the range. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A reach for Jack Sawyer in slot 66; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
AJ Barner in the 102nd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They let Smael Mondon Jr. come to them and pounced at pick No. 139. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A quiet steal in No. 180: Jaylin Simpson for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 223 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
