Some picks age like wine; Braelon Allen at Round 4, Pick 25 will need to, sitting 30 spots clear of his grade. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Perry.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
The board had Quinyon Mitchell higher than slot 41, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Javon Bullard at the 57th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open.
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in No. 91, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Braelon Allen this early at pick No. 125. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tommy Eichenberg in pick 135. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reasonable price with a little left over, De'Corian Clark in slot 203. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Erick All at the 217th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Sheridan Jones in pick No. 219 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Mark Perry is a better player than the 256th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
