Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Packers spent pick 246 on John Emery Jr., a name most had 97 spots down the list. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a problem off the edge, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Calen Bullock. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in the 57th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Sedrick Van Pran in No. 88 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A want over a need in the 91st pick: Jaden Hicks adds a safety while quarterback, wide receiver and other spots keeps waiting.
No edge and no loss on Jarrian Jones in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A big swing on Jaylen Wright at pick No. 135, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They did well to land Christian Jones in the 203rd pick, just ahead of his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid a round early for J.J. Weaver in pick 217, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Dwight McGlothern at No. 219 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A wild overpay on John Emery Jr. in Round 7, Pick 26, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
