The tape said wait; the Packers did not. Dwight McGlothern went at pick 219, a good 38 picks before the board was ready.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid up for Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 41 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Edgerrin Cooper at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Malachi Corley is a better player than slot 88 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Tykee Smith at the 91st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board had cheaper options than Will Shipley at the 125th pick, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take Malik Mustapha, a safety that was not the priority.
A tidy little value on Christian Jones in No. 203, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
They let Jawhar Jordan come to them and pounced at pick No. 217. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Dwight McGlothern at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Eric Gentry in pick 246, and that is fine. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
