The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Packers watched Calen Bullock slide 42 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
If Watson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get an island corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid up for Edgerrin Cooper at slot 41 when waiting would have done the job. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jonathon Brooks in the 57th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Calen Bullock at Round 3, Pick 25 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take Tykee Smith, a safety that was not the priority.
Sataoa Laumea at pick No. 126 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
A quiet steal in the 168th pick: Jaylen Wright for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Tanor Bortolini a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A big swing on Nathaniel Watson at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Dwight McGlothern at Round 7, Pick 23 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached into another round for Jordan Whittington, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
