Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Ja'Lynn Polk, the No. 55 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 88.
They will need Thomas to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback, tight end and other spots went begging. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get an island corner at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Nice patience on Tyler Nubin, who had no business lasting to the 41st pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Edgerrin Cooper at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They robbed the room for Ja'Lynn Polk here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots to take Javon Bullard, a safety that was not the priority.
A wild overpay on Drake Nugent in pick No. 126, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy little value on Jaylen Wright in the 168th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Christian Jones in the 203rd pick is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and JD Bertrand at Round 6, Pick 41 is the proof. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Xavier Thomas in No. 243 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Daequan Hardy in the 251st pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
