The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to Caleb Williams, and the whole operation now runs on his development. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
However the rest shakes out, Worthy at that price is a win they earned. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. With tight end, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them.
The cost of the Gray reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 27th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They let Tyler Guyton come to them and pounced at pick No. 35. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Taking Nate Wiggins in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No edge and no loss on Payton Wilson in the 40th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor itch, scratched.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Jeremiah Trotter Jr. while clear needs at tight end, running back and other spots sat open.
Xavier Worthy in pick 100 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 102 on Cedric Gray with tight end, running back and other spots unsolved.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Zach Frazier in pick No. 104, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Roger Rosengarten at pick 139 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Braiden McGregor at slot 179 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Johnny Dixon all the way to the 222nd overall pick, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
