The Packers put a flag in the ground for John Emery Jr., 104 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Sweat at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get an island corner, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jackson Powers-Johnson a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
No edge and no loss on Jonathon Brooks in pick No. 57; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking T'Vondre Sweat in pick 88 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A slide stopped in slot 91, with Johnny Wilson worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They did well to land Jarrian Jones in the 126th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A real head-scratcher, Isaiah Davis in Round 5, Pick 32 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Christian Jones went about where he belonged in the 203rd overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Nathaniel Watson this early at slot 216. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Daequan Hardy slid further than he should have, and No. 243 is lovely value for the cornerback. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
John Emery Jr. at pick No. 251 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
