The tape said wait; the Bears did not. Dasan McCullough went at the 241st overall pick, a good 82 picks before the board was ready. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
They banked enough surplus on Lane to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 30 they get a wrecking ball inside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Fair-plus on Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Dani Dennis-Sutton in Round 2, Pick 25 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jake Golday at slot 89 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled Ja'Kobi Lane all the way to the Round 4 slot, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value with a capital V on Thaddeus Dixon in pick 239, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dasan McCullough at the 241st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
