San Francisco 49ers

No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took Nadame Tucker a full 44 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. The Bernard pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.4 · Pick 36 · Dillon Thieneman · S · rank 27
Value with a capital V on Dillon Thieneman in pick 36, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Malachi Lawrence · DE-EDGE · rank 54
They went early on Malachi Lawrence in the 39th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Germie Bernard · WR · rank 62
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Germie Bernard in slot 77. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Kaleb Proctor · DL · rank 135
Kaleb Proctor in pick No. 127 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Nadame Tucker · DE-EDGE · rank 177
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Nadame Tucker well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.2 · Pick 142 · Isaiah World · OT · rank 148
Isaiah World at the 142nd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.4 · Pick 144 · Beau Stephens · OG · rank 161
Beau Stephens at the 144th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.3 · Pick 184 · Bryce Boettcher · LB · rank 176
They read the board right and Bryce Boettcher was the payoff at pick 184. The roster fit checks out.
R6.4 · Pick 185 · Ephesians Prysock · CB · rank 192
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ephesians Prysock. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R6.27 · Pick 208 · Jeff Caldwell · WR · rank 193
Nice patience on Jeff Caldwell, who had no business lasting to slot 208. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.13 · Pick 229 · Riley Nowakowski · TE · rank 225
Riley Nowakowski at Round 7, Pick 13 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It fills a real need, too.
