The tape said wait; the Patriots did not. Zion Tupuola-Fetui went at the 180th overall pick, a good 35 picks before the board was ready.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Sanders steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 15th pick they get a building block for the line. A real need, handled.
J.J. McCarthy in slot 34 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
Ladd McConkey at Round 2, Pick 14 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ja'Tavion Sanders in the Round 3 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A premium they did not need to pay, Khyree Jackson a notch or two before his time. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Ray Davis at the 103rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Kitan Oladapo in the 137th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Zion Tupuola-Fetui. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Walter Rouse reach pick No. 193 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
JD Bertrand at Round 7, Pick 11 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
