Of all the ways to open, the Patriots chose the head-scratcher, spending Round 4, Pick 3 on Javon Solomon with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still wide open.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. If one pick saves this weekend, it is McGlothern.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A tidy little value on Bo Nix in Round 2, Pick 2, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
Nothing to complain about; Kingsley Suamataia went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE that was not the priority.
Dallin Holker in pick No. 137 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Dwight McGlothern at No. 180 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
Jha'Quan Jackson at the 193rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
