There is reaching, and then there is Matt Gulbin at pick 139. The 49ers jumped the board by 43 and dared it to prove them wrong. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a downhill hitter at safety. More want than need.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zion Young. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Keylan Rutledge at pick 80, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy little value on Tacario Davis in pick No. 115, a step better than break-even. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Trey Zuhn III in No. 133. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid up for Kaytron Allen at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Matt Gulbin in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They went early on Riley Nowakowski in slot 211, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
